The Be a Better Human initiative was created with a group of Flinders students from the ground up, to reflect our campus culture and what we think everyone needs to appreciate – consent, respect and empathy. We don’t just want it to be about what we shouldn’t do, we want it to be about self-improvement, for everyone. And when we say ‘everyone’, we really do mean everyone. We’re talking about all genders and everyone who is part of our campus community – students, academics, service staff, even baristas – we all need to take a moment and consider how we can ‘better’ our behaviour.
Change, whether it’s a national movement or within our community is not just achieved by the famous, the politicians or the activists – it’s created by all of us. So let’s allow ourselves to picture a new reality, a new campus, a new community. What would that look like? Read on and let’s examine our behaviour and attitudes in a way we may have not considered before. Talk to people about it; ask them how they’re going and what they think, and share how you feel. But most of all, be open and get involved over the next few weeks!
