A magazine for the ideas, work and lives of Flinders students.
Empire Times is Flinders University’s student magazine, published in print four times a year and online throughout the year. It covers student life, culture, politics, creativity and the issues students care about.
The student editorial team sets the direction, works with contributors and helps turn writing, artwork, photography and ideas into something students will actually want to pick up and read.

Work across commissioning, contributor support, editing, ideas, digital content and the practical production of each issue.
Before you apply.
Do I need publishing experience?
No, but it helps. You’ll get training and support. Relevant experience can come from coursework, student media, clubs, creative projects, writing, design, social media, community involvement or other collaborative work.
Who can apply?
The opportunity is open to current Flinders University students who can participate throughout the 2027 editorial term, from November 2026 to November 2027.
Is the role paid?
Yes. Editors receive an honorarium of $8,500 in acknowledgement of the contribution required.
Can I request adjustments?
Yes. Students can contact FUSA to request accessible information or adjustments for the application and interview process.

In-person information sessions
Choose the 12–1pm session or 2–3pm session at the Nucleus, Bedford Park campus, near Flinders Connect.
Online information session
A separate live option for students who cannot attend at Bedford Park, running Thursday 20 August at 10:30am. Register for the online session.
Expressions of interest close
Applications must be submitted by the advertised closing time.
Shortlisting
The selection panel reviews applications and contacts shortlisted candidates.
Interviews
Shortlisted applicants meet with the panel to discuss their ideas, experience and approach to the role.
Offers
Successful applicants are contacted and appointment details are finalised.

Here’s how it works.
Apply
Submit the expression of interest form by 28 August.
Shortlist
Applications are reviewed against the selection criteria.
Meet
Shortlisted applicants attend an interview with the panel.
Make it
Appointed editors begin onboarding and early planning in November.
